Most of us hit the ground running with WordPress - we have a site to build for a client or ourselves and install anything and everything to help us achieve our goals. As a WordCamp Lead and WordPress Meetup Organizer, I often have to talk the aforementioned builders off of the ledge with the tips contained in this presentation.

I'll share the Lucky Seven, a few must-have WordPress Plugins everyone should use, and why you should be using each. In our time together we'll also cover:

  • What is a plugin?
  • Where to find plugins;
  • The recommended way to find a plugin;
  • Free vs Premium plugins;
  • What factors to consider when choosing a plugin (support, community, etc); and
  • Avoid common pitfalls users encounter when installing plugins

Join me as we work to help you achieve your goals, level up, add value to your practice with WordPress.

Also presented at...

WordCamp Las Vegas September 2019 ( - this presentation was geared more at not just plugins but all the most common issues and pitfalls users experience when using WordPress.

About the Presenter

Joe A Simpson Jr

Senior Digital Administrator, Metro Los Angeles

Joe A. Simpson, Jr. is a Front-End Web Developer and User-Experience Designer specializing in WordPress solutions. He is also a SiteGround Ambassador.

During endless, sun-soaked days he works at Metro Los Angeles, one of the largest transit agencies in the country, fighting the good fight to ease gridlock around Los Angeles County. When their Lead Developer and CSS goddess both left to pursue other opportunities, Joe inherited a Headway-themed design (sans child theme) and the rest is history.

Over thirteen years later, he manages a growing WordPress blog network consisting of dozen project-specific or transit news sites. He brings expertise in Search Engine Optimization and Accessibility to Metro's Digital Strategy team.

Faced with a life-altering heart event in 2017, he pivoted, focusing FIRST on doing the things he truly loved -- WordPress, creative passions, teaching tech, and truly giving back. He actively contributes to the WordPress Community, founding the WordPress Santa Clarita Valley and Elementor Santa Clarita Valley Meetups, speaking or volunteering at WordCamps, and is the Lead Organizer for WordCamp Santa Clarita.

In April 2019, fifteen months after getting back into the WordPress Community, he became Lead Organizer for his brainchild, WordCamp Santa Clarita, the first WordCamp north of Los Angeles and south of San Francisco in over five years.
